Government Job Age Relaxation for OBC, SC, ST & PwD (2026)

Government job age relaxation is the extra age, over the general upper limit, that reserved-category candidates get when applying for Sarkari posts. If you are a few months or years past the advertised maximum age, age relaxation can still keep you eligible β€” so it is worth knowing your exact entitlement before you write off any vacancy.

What government job age relaxation means

Every recruitment notification lists an upper age limit for the general (UR) category β€” for example 27 years for SSC CGL or 33 years for some Railway posts. Reserved categories get a defined number of years added on top of that limit. This is calculated against a fixed cut-off date mentioned in the notification, not the date you fill the form.

Relaxation is a legal right, but you must hold a valid certificate in the prescribed central-government format to claim it. Without the certificate on document-verification day, you are treated as general category.

Category-wise age relaxation (central government jobs)

For most central government recruitment, the standard government job age relaxation is:

  • OBC (non-creamy layer): +3 years
  • SC / ST: +5 years
  • PwD (Persons with Disability): +10 years (general), +13 (OBC), +15 (SC/ST)
  • Ex-servicemen: service period + 3 years (rules vary by post)
  • EWS (Economically Weaker Section): no extra age relaxation β€” same limit as general
  • Central government employees / departmental candidates: up to +5 years, post-dependent

How government job age relaxation is calculated

Add your category relaxation to the general upper limit, then compare it with your age on the notification's cut-off date. If your age is below the relaxed limit, you are eligible.

Example: an OBC candidate applying for a post with a general limit of 27 gets 27 + 3 = 30 years. A PwD-SC candidate could stack relaxations and reach a much higher ceiling. Always read the notification's relaxation table β€” a few schemes (like J&K residents or widows/divorced women) add their own categories.

Common age-relaxation mistakes to avoid

  • Counting age from the form-filling date instead of the official cut-off date.
  • Assuming EWS gets age relaxation β€” it does not, only fee and reservation benefits.
  • Using a state caste certificate where a central-format certificate is required.
  • Letting the OBC non-creamy-layer certificate expire (it is usually valid for the financial year).

Frequently asked questions

Does EWS get age relaxation in government jobs?

No. EWS candidates get a 10% reservation and fee benefits but the same upper age limit as the general category. Age relaxation applies to OBC, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen.

From which date is my age calculated?

From the cut-off date printed in the official notification (often the closing date or 1 January / 1 July of the year), never the date you submit the form.
